Q: WHAT IS A SOLAR CANDLE?
A: The name is self-explanatory. The Solar Candle was specifi cally designed to replace the standard paraffi n-wax candle and it gains its energy from the sun. This makes it solar powered and its light output is measured in candle numbers. In fact, the light it produces is equivalent to that of fi ve candles!


Q: HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

A: The cost of the unit is extremely economical as there is no new or ongoing cost for fuel (power). The battery should last for four years with medium or moderate use and three years with heavy use.


In order to compete with the Nightlight a family would have to burn five (5) candles at one time per day. 1 825 candles per year = over 5 475 candles in three years, a Nightlight will cost a fraction of the cost of the candles.


In addition, when one takes the safety factors into account the actual value of the product, when compared to older and more widely used methods of light in the informal sector, is immeasurable.  


Q: IS IT SAFE?

A: It is far safer than current conventional methods of gaining light in rural areas and informal   settlements. There is no risk of fi re should the lamp be knocked over; no fuel means fewer health hazards (including inhaling fumes – a kerosene lantern burning for four hours a day emits more than 100kg of CO₂ per year); and any potential burn factors are greatly minimised. The Nightlight does not make use of light bulbs; therefore there is no risk of broken or shattered light bulbs which may pose a safety risk.

It is also safe for a child to use.


Q: WHERE CAN I USE IT?

A: The Nightlight is small, lite, and portable and can be rested on practically any fl at surface. It can therefore be used in almost any place where light is needed – even places which previously may have been considered a fi re hazard. The size of the room or area that needs to be lit will dictate the number of Solar Candles needed.


Q: HOW DOES IT WORK?

A: It has been designed and developed in such a way that it is easier and simpler to use than both conventional candles and paraffi n lamps; and less complicated than electrical lights when it comes to light bulbs, changing plugs, or fi nding adapters, etc.

 

The Nightlight’s battery is recharged by the sun. To facilitate the recharge the solar panels have been placed on the base of the lamp. In order to charge the panels the lamp has to be placed upside down with the solar panels facing upwards and in area where sunlight can reach it. It has been developed with ease of use in mind and it is just as easily stood upside down as it is the right-way up. There is nothing to disconnect or re-connect; a simple fl ip of direction is all that is necessary.

 

Instead of light bulbs, the Nightlight uses Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) which have a 12 000 - 15 000 hour life span.


When it is stood the right way up, a small switch on the base of the lamp enables the lamp to be turned on and off, the same as a regular lamp.

 

Q: WHEN CAN I CHARGE IT?
A:
Due to the nature of solar panels, they can be charged during daylight hours regardless of weather conditions, although it may take longer to charge in overcast and wet weather.

The lamp will not charge at night or in dark areas.

 

Q: CAN I CHARGE THE NIGHTLIGHT INDOORS THROUGH A WINDOW PANE?
A:
Yes, but you will lose 20% of the sun’s energy. Much like charging the Nightlight in overcast conditions.

 

Q: HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CHARGE?
A:
If charged in bright sunlight the average charge time is fi ve to six hours. However, this increases to between eight and nine hours if the sky is overcast.


Q: HOW LONG DOES THE LIGHT LAST FOR ONCE THE BATTERY IT IS CHARGED?
A:
If the battery has been fully charged the user will be able to enjoy between six and seven hours of light.


Q: WHAT IS THE LAMP WATTAGE?
A:
The power output is not measured in watts but rather in the number of candles. Just as a car’s power output can be measured in horse power, the Nightlight Solar Candle is measured in candle power. The current Nightlight light strength is approximately that of fi ve (5) candles.


Q: HOW LONG WILL THE EQUIPMENT LAST AND HOW GOOD IS THE QUALITY?
A:
The highest quality components have been used in manufacturing the Nightlight. The battery, which can be replaced, is lithium-ion (similar to those used in cell phones) and while guaranteed for one year, should last for four years with medium or moderate use and three years with heavy use. The battery holds its charge exceptionally well. Once fully charged and then stored, the battery will still have 90% of its charge after six months.


The solar panels have a 15 year life span and the Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) will last for approximately 12 000 – 15 000 hours. The circuit board assembly is fully automatic which eliminates the possibility of any human error.


Q: WHERE CAN I USE IT?
A:
The Nightlight can be used almost anywhere it is needed. It is waterresistant, not water-proof, so care needs to be taken in rainy weather.

 

Q: WHAT ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS?
A:
As no paraffi n or other material fuel is used there is no chance of spilling and therefore no environmental effects. There are no CO₂ emissions whatsoever.
